Single Phase vs 3 Phase – What's the Difference?

In plain English:

  • Single phase — one live wire, one neutral, one earth. Standard for every HDB flat, most condos, and most small businesses. Typical supply: 40A, 60A, 80A, or 100A. Max usable power at 230V single-phase: roughly 23 kW on a 100A supply.
  • 3 phase — three live wires (each offset by 120°), one neutral, one earth. Standard for larger commercial units, factories, restaurants with serious kitchen loads, workshops, and some landed houses. Each phase is still 230V to neutral, but the three phases together deliver three times the usable power on the same cable size.

The practical difference: a 3-phase 100A supply gives you about 69 kW of usable power, balanced across three independent “rails.” Your heavy equipment (oven, kiln, commercial aircon, EV charger) can each sit on its own phase, and they no longer fight each other for capacity.

Do You Need a 3-Phase Supply?

You are most likely a candidate for 3-phase if any of the following apply:

  • You run a commercial kitchen with multiple high-draw appliances — convection oven, salamander, induction wok, walk-in fridge, dishwasher — all hitting the same single-phase supply at dinner service.
  • You run a workshop or light industrial unit with 3-phase machinery (large compressors, lathes, welders, large CNC).
  • Your HDB or condo is maxed out at 60A single-phase and you are adding an EV charger, a large aircon, a server rack, or similar.
  • You have a larger landed house with a pool, a home workshop, multiple air-conditioning units, and a home EV charger — single-phase just does not have the headroom.

3-Phase DB Box & Distribution Board

A 3-phase DB box looks similar to a single-phase DB, but with three rows of MCBs (one per phase) and a 3-pole main breaker instead of a single-pole. We supply and install:

  • 3-phase metal-enclosed DBs from Schneider, ABB, Hager, and Legrand, sized to your circuit count.
  • 3-pole main breaker (or 4-pole with switched neutral) at the supply rating.
  • 3-pole MCBs and RCBOs for individual 3-phase circuits.
  • Single-pole MCBs and RCBOs for 3-phase circuits that share a single phase (typical for lighting and small sockets).
  • Phase-balance monitoring to ensure your load is spread roughly equally across the three phases. Unbalanced 3-phase causes the same kind of nuisance tripping as overloaded single-phase.

3-Phase Sockets & Plugs (16A / 32A)

3-phase sockets and plugs look different from the standard 13A Type G you have at home. Common variants in Singapore:

Upgrading from Single Phase to 3 Phase (SP Services Application)

This is the part most people do not realise: in Singapore, you cannot just install a 3-phase DB and call it a day. The 3-phase supply itself has to be approved and installed by SP Services (the Singapore Power grid operator). Here is how the full process works:

  1. Site survey and load calculation — we visit, count your existing and planned loads, and confirm 3-phase is the right call.
  2. SP Services application — we help you prepare and submit the application for a 3-phase supply upgrade. SP will assess whether the upstream infrastructure (transformer, cabling to your unit) can support 3-phase for your address. For most commercial units in industrial estates, this is straightforward. For some HDB or condo addresses, it may not be possible.
  3. SP approval and quotation — SP typically takes 2–4 weeks to approve and quote. The SP fee depends on the scope — sometimes a simple meter change, sometimes a transformer or cable upgrade.
  4. On-site works — SP disconnects your single-phase supply, pulls the 3-phase cable to your meter, reconnects, and tests. We coordinate the timing.
  5. Our work — we install the new 3-phase DB, re-terminate every circuit, balance the load across phases, and test under realistic conditions.
  6. LEW sign-off + CoC — every part of the installation is signed off by a Licensed Electrical Worker. SP typically also requires a LEW endorsement of the consumer-side installation.

3-Phase for F&B Kitchens, Workshops & Commercial Units

3-phase is most common in three Singapore commercial settings:

  • F&B kitchens — restaurants, hawker stalls doing central prep, bakery central kitchens, catering facilities. The combination of convection ovens, induction cookers, salamanders, and walk-in fridges on a single-phase supply is the #1 reason F&B operators upgrade to 3-phase.
  • Workshops and light industrial — car workshops, metal workshops, woodworking, 3D printing farms, small-scale manufacturing. Any 3-phase motor or piece of equipment benefits directly.
