Single Phase vs 3 Phase – What's the Difference?
In plain English:
- Single phase — one live wire, one neutral, one earth. Standard for every HDB flat, most condos, and most small businesses. Typical supply: 40A, 60A, 80A, or 100A. Max usable power at 230V single-phase: roughly 23 kW on a 100A supply.
- 3 phase — three live wires (each offset by 120°), one neutral, one earth. Standard for larger commercial units, factories, restaurants with serious kitchen loads, workshops, and some landed houses. Each phase is still 230V to neutral, but the three phases together deliver three times the usable power on the same cable size.
The practical difference: a 3-phase 100A supply gives you about 69 kW of usable power, balanced across three independent “rails.” Your heavy equipment (oven, kiln, commercial aircon, EV charger) can each sit on its own phase, and they no longer fight each other for capacity.
