In Singapore, “power point” and “socket” mean the same thing — the Type G 13A square-pin outlet on your wall. We use both words on this page (and across our site) for that reason. Adding a New Power Point / Additional Socket

Sometimes you simply need one more socket in a spot the original builder did not plan for — behind the new TV, beside the study desk, on the kitchen island, next to the bed. We add new power points in three common ways:

Surface-mounted (with trunking) — the fastest and cleanest option. We run a slim PVC trunking on the wall surface from the nearest existing socket or DB, and fit a new 13A outlet. Ideal for HDB, rental flats, and any place where you cannot or do not want to break the wall.
Concealed (chase into wall) — we cut a narrow channel in the plaster or brick, run the cable inside, and make good. Best for renovations and for HDB / condo owners who want the cleanest finish. Slightly more dust and noise, but invisible once plastered and painted.
From existing spur — if there is already a 13A socket nearby, we can sometimes run a new spur cable from it to a new location. Fastest, cheapest, but only works where the existing circuit has spare capacity.

For HDB and most condos, we always check the circuit’s current load first. A 20A circuit (typical for HDB power sockets) can safely feed about 4–5 sockets under normal use. If we are adding the 6th, we may need to run a fresh circuit from the DB.

Typical add-a-power-point time: 1–3 hours depending on the route, wall type, and whether a new circuit is needed.

Socket Repair & Replacement (Cracked, Loose, Sparking)

Most socket problems fall into one of these four buckets, and all are repairable on the same visit:

Cracked or broken face plate — usually a mechanical impact (moving a sofa, a vacuum cleaner bump). We replace the face plate and check the back wiring.
Loose socket (plug falls out) — the internal grip has worn out. We replace the socket mechanism (or the full plate if it is one piece).
Sparking or small flash when plugging in — almost always loose back-terminal screws or a worn mechanism. We re-terminate, replace the socket, and test under load.
Burnt or discoloured socket — the most serious of the four. Caused by sustained arcing or overload. We replace the socket, inspect the cable, and re-test the circuit. If the cable insulation is heat-damaged, we may need to replace a section — see our Electrical Wiring Repair page.

⚠️ If a socket is hot to the touch, or smells burnt even when nothing is plugged in, stop using it immediately and call us. That is a precursor to an electrical fire.

13A vs 15A vs 3-Pin vs Universal

Singapore uses a few different socket formats, and choosing the right one matters:

13A, BS-1363 (Type G) — the standard square-pin socket you see in every HDB and condo. Used for everything from kettles to TVs. All our replacements are 13A unless you specifically ask otherwise.
15A round-pin (Type M) — used for some air-conditioning units, larger water heaters, and certain commercial equipment. If your aircon spur currently has a 15A round-pin socket, you should keep it 15A. We carry 15A sockets in stock.
3-pin Type I (Australia / China style) — uncommon in Singapore residential, but seen in some commercial / industrial equipment. We supply and fit these on request.
Universal sockets — accept a wide range of plug types. Useful for guest rooms, rental properties, and home offices with imported equipment. We supply Clipsal and Schneider universal variants rated for Singapore’s 230V supply.

1-Gang / 2-Gang / 4-Gang Socket Options

The “gang” count is just how many sockets fit on one face plate. Picking the right one is a balance between convenience and circuit capacity:

1-gang — one socket per plate. Most common for new builds in HDB and condo. Cleanest look.
2-gang — two sockets per plate. The most popular in Singapore homes. Saves wall space.
3-gang — three sockets per plate. Often used in kitchens and behind TVs.
4-gang — four sockets per plate. Useful for media walls and home offices.

Important: A 4-gang socket is not the same as 4 separate circuits. It is one socket, just with 4 outlet positions. The total current it can safely supply is still limited by the cable feeding it. If you need 4 sockets drawing simultaneously at high load, we will usually recommend 2 × 2-gang on 2 separate circuits instead.

USB & Pop-Up Sockets

For bedrooms, kitchen islands, study desks, and conference tables:

USB-integrated sockets — a standard 13A socket with 1 or 2 USB-A / USB-C ports built in. Charges phones and tablets directly, freeing the 13A outlet for higher-draw devices. We supply Schneider, Legrand, and Clipsal variants.
Pop-up sockets — hidden inside a kitchen island or desk, push down to open, push again to close. Available with USB-A, USB-C, and 13A outlets. Particularly popular in new condo and landed renovations.

We will tell you upfront which brand / model is the best value for the use case, and we always confirm your USB cable wattage requirements (a 5W phone charger cable is fine on a 2.4A USB port; a 65W laptop charger needs USB-C PD).

Aircon Power Point & Isolator Installation

Air-conditioner spurs in Singapore are typically a dedicated 15A or 20A circuit from the DB, terminating in an aircon isolator (a weatherproof switch mounted near the indoor unit) rather than a regular socket. This is the safe, code-compliant way to wire an air-conditioner.

We install aircon power points and isolators as part of:

New aircon installation (coordinating with your aircon contractor if needed)
Aircon replacement (old isolator damaged, or upgrading to a higher-amperage model)

If your current aircon spur is on a regular 13A socket (a common shortcut in older HDB flats), we strongly recommend upgrading to a proper 15A/20A isolator. It is a small job with a real safety benefit.

FAQs

Can I just replace a socket myself?

Singapore law (Electricity Act, Cap. 89A) requires that fixed-wiring electrical work be carried out by a Licensed Electrical Worker. Replacing a like-for-like socket is generally treated as fixed-wiring work, so a licensed electrician is the legal standard. Beyond legality, a wrong connection at the back of a socket is one of the most common causes of house fires in Singapore — a $120 socket job is not worth the risk.

How long does it take to add a new power point?

A surface-trunking add is typically 1–2 hours. A concealed (chase-into-wall) add is 2–4 hours, plus making good. The total time depends on the wall material, the cable route, and whether we need to add a new MCB at the DB.

What brand of socket do you supply?

We supply Schneider, Legrand, Clipsal, and Hager — all of which are widely available in Singapore, all BS-1363 compliant, and all backed by manufacturer warranty. If you have already bought a particular brand or model, we are happy to install it.

Do I need to upgrade my DB to add a new power point?

Not always. If the existing circuit has spare capacity (a 20A circuit feeding 3 sockets can usually take a 4th without issue), we just spur off the existing circuit. If the circuit is full, we add a new MCB at the DB and run a fresh cable. We will tell you upfront which option your installation needs.

My socket sparked once — is it safe to keep using it?

Probably not, but it depends. A single small spark when unplugging a load is normal. A spark when plugging in (especially with a “pop” or flash) is a sign of loose back-terminal screws, a worn mechanism, or both. We recommend stopping use of that socket and getting it checked — a 30-minute visit is much cheaper than a house fire.

Can I get a 2-pin Euro socket for my imported appliance?

Yes — we can supply and fit 2-pin Schuko (Type F) or Euro (Type C) sockets on request. We will tell you upfront whether your specific appliance needs a step-down transformer, and we will always fit a properly earthed European-style outlet rather than a cheap ungrounded adaptor.
