Light Switch Replacement (1-Gang / 2-Gang / 3-Gang)

The most common job we do: your existing switch still works, but the face plate is cracked, discoloured, or just dated — or the switch has become loose, sticky, or intermittent. We replace it on the spot with a new one from our van.

We carry and install all the standard Singapore variants:

1-gang switch — controls one light from one location. The default for HDB bedrooms, study, store.
2-gang switch — controls two lights from one plate. The default for HDB living rooms, kitchen, and most corridors.
3-gang switch — controls three lights from one plate. Common in larger HDB living rooms, condo living/dining, and landed common areas.
4-gang switch — controls four lights from one plate. Less common, but used in some condo and landed layouts.

Dimmer & LED Dimmable Switch Installation

A dimmer is one of the highest-impact upgrades you can make to a room — a dining cove, a bedroom, a TV-watching space. But it is also the upgrade with the most pitfalls, because not every dimmer works with every LED light.

Common combinations we install:

Trailing-edge dimmer + dimmable LED downlight — the modern, quiet, reliable standard. Brands we recommend: Schneider AvatarOn, Legrand Galea, Lutron, and Clipsal Iconic.
Leading-edge dimmer — older technology, more affordable, but can cause buzzing with some LEDs. We only fit these if you already have the dimmer and want a like-for-like replacement.
0–10V dimmer — for commercial and certain premium residential setups with separate driver-based lighting.

⚠️ Common mistake to avoid: Pairing a non-dimmable LED with a dimmer switch. The light will flicker, hum, or fail early. If you are unsure whether your existing LED is dimmable, send us a photo of the lamp or driver label and we will tell you.

Switch + Socket Combo Replacement

A lot of HDB and condo switches sit right next to a 13A socket on the same wall — and many homeowners want both updated at the same time for a cleaner look. We fit combined switch + socket plates in the standard 85 mm × 145 mm Singapore format, available in all major brands.

If you are planning a full-room or whole-flat re-look, combining the switch and socket replacement into a single visit is the most cost-effective way to do it. Two-Way & Intermediate Switching

A 2-way switch lets you control one light from two different locations — typical for a long corridor, a staircase landing, or a bedroom with two entry doors. An intermediate switch lets you control one light from three or more locations, and is what most landed staircases and long condo corridors actually need.

2-way switching (2 locations): uses two 2-way switches and a 3-core + earth cable between them. Most HDB flats have at least one 2-way circuit already (e.g. the main corridor switch and the bedroom switch both controlling the corridor light).
Intermediate switching (3+ locations): uses 2-way switches at the ends and one or more intermediate switches in the middle. The wiring is more involved and the cable routing needs to be planned.

If your corridor or staircase light only has one switch and you want to add a second, we can usually do this without breaking the wall — running the new cable through the ceiling void. The most common reason for adding a 2-way: an HDB or condo layout change after a renovation.

Signs Your Switch Needs Replacing

A light switch is a $20–$60 part. The labour to replace it is small. So the decision to replace is almost always “yes” once you notice a problem. The signs that it is time:

Loose or wobbling — the rocker no longer clicks cleanly. Internal mechanism is worn.
Cracking or popping sound when toggled — the internal contact is arcing. This is a fire precursor and should be replaced promptly.
Warm to the touch — a switch should never be warm. A warm switch means a poor internal connection.
Sparks or a small flash when you toggle it — same as above. Stop using it and call us.
The light flickers only when you wiggle the switch — worn contacts, not the bulb.
Visible scorch mark or discolouration on the face plate — overheating has already happened.
Yellowed, cracked, or outdated face plate — purely cosmetic, but a great chance to upgrade the look of the room.

If your switch is warm, sparking, or making a crackling sound — do not use it again until it is replaced.

FAQs

Can I replace a light switch myself?

Singapore law (Electricity Act, Cap. 89A) treats light switch replacement as fixed-wiring electrical work, which legally requires a Licensed Electrical Worker. Beyond legality, a wrong connection at the back of a switch is a real shock and fire risk — the back of a switch is always live even when the switch is “off”. A $80 professional replacement is not worth the risk.

How long does a switch replacement take?

A single 1-gang or 2-gang switch replacement is 15–30 minutes. A multi-switch room or whole-flat re-look is 1–2 hours. Adding a new 2-way switch to an existing circuit is typically 1–2 hours including cable routing.

Can any LED light be dimmed?

No. Only LEDs marked as “dimmable” can be dimmed reliably. Pairing a non-dimmable LED with a dimmer switch causes flicker, hum, and early failure. If you are unsure, send us a photo of the lamp label and we will tell you.

My switch is warm to the touch — is that normal?

No. A light switch should never be warm. Warmth means a loose connection, an overloaded circuit, or a failing mechanism. Stop using the switch and call us for a same-day or next-day replacement.

Can you add a second switch to control the same light from another location?

Yes — that is a 2-way switching addition. Most HDB flats already have at least one 2-way circuit; for new ones, we usually run the cable through the ceiling void without breaking the wall.

Can I get a 2-pin Euro socket for my imported appliance?

Yes — we can supply and fit 2-pin Schuko (Type F) or Euro (Type C) sockets on request. We will tell you upfront whether your specific appliance needs a step-down transformer, and we will always fit a properly earthed European-style outlet rather than a cheap ungrounded adaptor.
