Power Trip Electrician Singapore – Fast Diagnosis & Repair

Power keeps tripping in your HDB flat, condo, or landed home? You are not alone. A tripping circuit breaker is one of the most common electrical problems in Singapore homes, and most of the time it is your MCB or RCCB doing exactly what it is designed to do — protecting you from a real fault.

At TRUST ELECTRICIANS, our licensed team handles power trip repair in Singapore every single day. We arrive fast, isolate the actual cause (not just reset the breaker), and leave your supply safer than we found it. Whether it is a single socket that keeps cutting out, the whole HDB unit going dark, or a commercial DB box that will not stay closed, we have seen it and fixed it.

What Is a "Power Trip" in Singapore? (Quick Definition)

In Singapore, “power trip” simply means your circuit breaker (MCB) or safety switch (RCCB/ELCB) has switched itself off to cut the electricity supply. The term covers three different situations:

  • Single-circuit trip — only one area lost power (e.g. kitchen sockets, one bathroom).
  • Whole-unit trip — the main switch or a high-amperage MCB has tripped and the entire home is dark.
  • Repeated trip — the breaker trips again minutes or hours after you reset it. This is the dangerous one — it almost always means there is still an active fault.

If your electricity keeps tripping, do not keep flipping the switch back on. Each reset is a small stress on an already-faulty circuit, and in the worst case (active short circuit or earth leakage) it can overheat cables inside the wall.

Why Does My Circuit Breaker Keep Tripping?

There are four underlying causes, and a good electrician will test all four before declaring the job done.

1. Overloaded Circuit

Too many high-draw appliances on one circuit — typically the kitchen or the air-conditioning circuit. A common HDB scenario: aircon + water heater + kettle on a 20A circuit.
Tell-tale sign: Trip only happens when a specific appliance is turned on.

2. Short Circuit (Merged Topic)

A “short” happens when a live wire touches a neutral or earth wire, usually because cable insulation has been damaged — by a recent drilling, a rodent, water ingress, or simply old age. This is the most common reason an HDB circuit breaker will not stay up.
Tell-tale sign: Breaker trips the instant you reset it, sometimes with a small flash or a burning smell.

3. Earth Leakage Fault

Current is leaking to earth through a faulty appliance, wet wiring, or a degraded RCCB. The RCCB (or ELCB) is the safety device that detects this and trips first.
Tell-tale sign: The RCCB switch (usually labelled “ELCB”) trips, not the MCB.

4. Faulty Appliance or Plug

Sometimes the wiring is fine and the culprit is a failing appliance — a water heater with a cracked element, an old fridge compressor, a hair dryer with a broken cord.
Tell-tale sign: Trip clears when the suspect appliance is unplugged.

How to Reset a Tripped Breaker Safely (Step-by-Step)

If you want to try one safe reset before calling us, follow this exact order:

  1. Identify the tripped switch. Open your DB box (usually near the front door). The tripped switch will be in the “down” or “off” position, while the rest are “up”/”on”. An RCCB/ELCB will usually show an orange flag.
  2. Switch off all appliances and lights on the affected circuit. Unplug the obvious suspects (kettle, water heater, aircon).
  3. Push the RCCB fully down first, then up to reset the earth-leakage protection.
  4. Push the MCB back up.
  5. Plug in and switch on appliances one at a time. If the breaker trips again the moment a specific appliance is connected, that appliance is the fault — stop using it and call us.
  6. If the breaker will not stay up, or trips within minutes — stop. The fault is in the wiring itself. Call a licensed electrician.

⚠️ Never hold a breaker in the “on” position with tape or a wedge. It removes the only protection between you and a house fire.

HDB Power Trip – What to Do & Who to Call

HDB flats in Singapore have specific failure patterns worth understanding:

  • HDB 3-room and 4-room DB boxes typically run 8–12 ways on a single-phase 40A or 60A supply. If you have added multiple air-conditioning units, a dryer, or an instant water heater, the original DB may simply be undersized. We routinely upgrade HDB DB boxes from 8-way to 16-way or 24-way — see our DB Box Electrician Singapore page.
  • The HDB main breaker (usually 40A, 60A, or 80A) can trip if your cumulative load exceeds what SP Services has approved. If your trips are happening at the main switch (not the smaller MCBs), you may need an HDB electrical loading check — read more on our Power Failure Singapore page.
  • HDB BTO flats (post-2010) generally have RCCB + MCB on every circuit and a dedicated circuit for the kitchen. Trips in BTO units are most often water-heater-related, especially after the heater has been in service 8+ years. See our Water Heater Installation & Replacement page for that specific issue.
  • Resale HDB flats (pre-2000) often have aging wiring that is now over-loaded with modern appliances. The safe long-term answer is full or partial rewiring — see our Residential Rewiring Singapore page.

Our Power Trip Repair Process

When you call TRUST ELECTRICIANS for a power trip, here is what we actually do — not just the reset:

  1. Telephone triage (free). Over the phone we already rule out the obvious (whole-building outage, HDB main breaker).
  2. On-site arrival + visual DB inspection. We check for burnt marks, melted insulation, water stains, and tripped flags.
  3. Isolation testing. We systematically isolate each circuit to find which one is causing the trip.
  4. Insulation resistance + earth fault test. Using a multifunction tester, we measure leakage current to confirm whether it is a wiring fault or an appliance fault.
  5. Targeted repair. We repair or replace only the failed component — a socket, a section of cable, an RCCB, or a water-heater isolator. No upselling, no unnecessary rewiring.
  6. Re-test the entire DB under load to make sure no other circuit is on the edge of failing.
  7. EMA-licensed sign-off where required, with a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) for the affected work.

Typical call-out time: 30–60 minutes for HDB and condo across Singapore. Typical repair time on site: 1–3 hours for most power trip jobs.

FAQs About Power Trips in Singapore

It means your circuit breaker (MCB) or safety switch (RCCB/ELCB) has automatically switched off to cut the electricity supply. It is a safety response — the breaker is protecting your home from overload, short circuit, or earth leakage.

The trip itself is the safety feature working. The danger is in ignoring a repeated trip and forcing the breaker back on — that can lead to overheated cables, melting insulation, or in the worst case an electrical fire. If a trip will not reset, treat it as urgent.

Once or twice, yes, while you isolate the cause. If a third reset fails, stop. There is an active fault that needs a licensed electrician with proper test instruments.

If the main switch (the big one, usually 40A–80A) trips — especially under evening load when aircons and water heaters run together — it may be an SP-approved loading limit. We do an HDB electrical loading check as part of our diagnosis. See Power Failure Electrician Singapore for the full picture.

For most HDB towns we can be on site within 60–90 minutes during working hours, and within 2 hours for after-hours emergencies. For genuine sparking or burning-smell emergencies, see our 24/7 Emergency Electrician Singapore page.

Only if we replace or modify fixed wiring (cables, DB box, RCCB, etc.). A simple MCB swap on a like-for-like basis usually does not require a CoC. We will tell you upfront if a CoC is needed for your job.

Most simple HDB power trip jobs (diagnosis + reset or one-part replacement) fall in the $80 – $260 range. Full DB upgrades or concealed-cable fault-finding can run $850 – $1,400+. See our Price List for full rates.
