Electrical Wiring Repair & Installation Singapore

Damaged, overheating, or shorting wiring is the most serious kind of electrical fault you can have in a home or business. Unlike a cracked socket or a loose switch, a wiring problem lives behind the wall — in the conduit, the ceiling void, or the floor screed — and the longer it is left, the worse it gets.

At TRUST ELECTRICIANS, we handle electrical wiring repair in Singapore for HDB flats, condominiums, and landed houses. We also install new wiring for renovations, additions, and fit-outs. All work is done by a licensed electrician under LEW supervision, to Singapore Standard CP5, with EMA-approved cables and proper earthing.

Exposed / Surface Wiring Repair

For HDB flats with surface-run wiring, or for properties with conduit trunking along the wall, a wiring repair is straightforward: we open the trunking, identify the damaged cable, replace the affected section, and close it back up.

Surface wiring problems are usually caused by:

  • Mechanical impact — a door, a piece of furniture, or a renovation drill hitting the conduit.
  • Overloading — too many high-draw appliances on one circuit, causing the cable to overheat and the insulation to become brittle.
  • Aged PVC insulation — pre-1990s installations sometimes used rubber-insulated cable that hardens and cracks with age.
  • Water ingress — particularly in kitchen, bathroom, and outdoor runs.

Typical repair time: 1–3 hours for a single-run surface wiring repair.

Concealed Wiring Repair (HDB & Condo)

Concealed wiring — cables run inside the wall, ceiling, or floor — is the more common and more challenging case in Singapore. The cable is hidden, the fault is hidden, and the repair usually involves some making-good of the wall afterwards.

Common concealed wiring scenarios we resolve:

  • HDB concealed wiring damaged during renovation drilling — the most common cause of an HDB power trip that will not reset. We use a cable tracer and insulation tester to locate the damaged section, open the minimum amount of wall, replace the affected run, and patch / make good.
  • Old PY cable (1990s HDB) — insulation has become brittle, the conductor is exposed, and any load risk is a short circuit. The safe long-term answer is a full or partial rewire. For a single-fault emergency, we can replace the affected run and bring it up to current standard. For a full picture of the rewire option, see our Electrical Rewiring Singapore and Residential Rewiring Singapore pages.
  • Concealed wiring short under tile / floor screed — rarer, but happens in older condos and landed houses. We use a thermal imaging camera and a low-voltage cable tracer to pinpoint the fault before opening anything.
  • Ceiling void wiring — common in condos with false ceilings. We work through the existing access panel or remove a small ceiling section to replace the run, then make good.

Typical concealed wiring repair time: 2–6 hours depending on location, accessibility, and length of cable run. We always quote a fixed price after diagnosis, before any wall is opened.

Faulty & Overheating Cable Replacement

A cable that runs hot, has discoloured insulation, or smells burnt is a fire in waiting. The most common cause is a sustained overload on a circuit that was undersized for the load it is now carrying — typically a kitchen or air-conditioning circuit that has had more appliances added over the years.

Signs your cable is overheating:

  • The MCB trips under normal load (not just under heavy load)
  • The face plate of a socket or switch is warm or discoloured
  • A faint burning smell near an outlet, switch, or along a wall
  • Visible scorching on the back of a removed socket or on the cable insulation

If you see any of the above, switch off the affected circuit at the DB and call us. The fix is a section of new cable, properly rated for the load, with new terminations.

Cable Sizing & Colour Code (Singapore Standard)

Singapore follows the BS 7671 / IEC 60446 colour code for fixed wiring:

  • Live (Phase): Brown (single phase L), or Red / Yellow / Blue for 3-phase L1 / L2 / L3
  • Neutral: Blue (or Black in older installations)
  • Earth: Green-Yellow stripe (or bare copper in some older installations)

Common cable sizes we use, and what they are appropriate for:

  • 1.5 mm² (twin & earth) — lighting circuits, 10A. Max load about 2,300W.
  • 2.5 mm² (twin & earth) — 13A socket circuits. Max load about 3,600W.
  • 4.0 mm² (twin & earth) — 20A socket circuits, small air-conditioning spurs. Max load about 4,800W.
  • 6.0 mm² (twin & earth) — larger air-conditioning spurs, water-heater circuits. Max load about 7,200W.
  • 10 mm² and above — main incoming, high-load commercial, sub-distribution.

If your existing cable is undersized for the load you intend to put on it (e.g. you have a 6.0 mm² cable feeding a 20A MCB, or 2.5 mm² feeding a water heater), we will tell you upfront and quote a re-cable as part of the same job.

Data & Network Cabling

In modern HDB and condo renovations, electrical wiring repair often goes hand-in-hand with data and network cabling — Cat 6 / Cat 6A for hard-wired internet, HDMI and coaxial for TV, and fibre-ready conduit to the DB.

We install:

  • Cat 6 / Cat 6A data points — for stable home-office internet, mesh Wi-Fi backhaul, and IP camera runs.
  • Coaxial / HDMI conduit — for TV points, especially in landed houses and larger condos.
  • Fibre-ready conduit — from the DB to the optical network terminal (ONT) location, in preparation for future fibre broadband upgrades.

If you are already opening the wall for an electrical repair, adding a data point in the same visit is the most cost-effective time to do it. See our Electrical Installation Services page for the wider scope.

Our Wiring Repair Process

  • Photo or symptom description — WhatsApp a photo of the affected switch / socket / DB box, or describe what is happening (trip, smell, scorch mark).
  • On-site diagnosis — we use a cable tracer, insulation resistance tester, and thermal camera to find the fault without unnecessary wall opening.
  • Fixed quote — written, transparent quote before any wall is opened or cable is run. No “we’ll see when we open it up” surprises.
  • Repair or replacement — we open the minimum amount of wall, replace the affected cable run, terminate properly at both ends, and test under load.
  • Making good — we patch the wall, plaster it smooth, and leave it ready for painting. Painting itself is outside our scope, but we can recommend a painter if needed.
  • LEW sign-off + CoC — for any fixed-wiring modification in Singapore, a Licensed Electrical Worker endorsement and Certificate of Compliance is required. We issue this as part of the same visit.

FAQs

The most common signs are: a power trip that will not reset, a socket or switch that is warm to the touch, a burning smell with no visible source, or a power outage that affects one room but not the corridor. If any of these are happening, switch off the affected circuit at the DB and call us.

Usually, yes — but only the minimum amount needed. We use a cable tracer and insulation tester to pinpoint the fault, so the open-up is small and targeted. We then patch and make good so the wall is ready for painting.

It depends on how much of the installation is affected. A single-fault repair of a damaged PY cable is reasonable as an emergency fix. But if the PY cable is brittle throughout the flat, every run is a future fault waiting to happen, and a full rewire is the safer long-term answer. We will tell you honestly which option makes sense for your installation.

Yes — any fixed-wiring modification in Singapore (and a cable replacement is a fixed-wiring modification) legally requires a Licensed Electrical Worker endorsement and a Certificate of Compliance. We issue this as part of the same visit, and you will receive a written copy for your records. This is important for HDB resale handovers, insurance claims, and any future renovation.

Yes — for HDB, condo, and landed renovations we run new wiring, install new DB components, and coordinate with your ID. See our Residential Rewiring Singapore page for the full renovation-wiring scope.
