DB Box Installation, Repair & Upgrade Singapore

The DB box — distribution board, electrical panel, breaker box, “the thing near the front door with all the switches” — is the heart of your home’s electrical system. Every circuit in your HDB, condo, or landed house runs back to it. When the DB is right-sized, well-organised, and properly labelled, electrical problems are rare and easy to fix. When it is overloaded, outdated, or patched together, they are not.

TRUST ELECTRICIANS provides complete DB box installation, repair, and upgrade services in Singapore for HDB flats, condominiums, landed houses, and commercial premises. We supply, fit, and rewire DB boxes from 8-way to 24-way (and larger for commercial), with proper circuit labelling, RCCB / MCB protection, and a LEW-signed Certificate of Compliance for the work.

DB Box Installation (New Board or Relocation)

For new BTO flats, resale HDB renovations, condo fit-outs, and additions to an existing installation:

  • New DB box for a new installation — sized to the circuit count, with 20% spare ways for future expansion. We supply metal-enclosed surface-mounted or flush-mounted DBs from Schneider, ABB, Hager, and Legrand.
  • DB box relocation — usually needed when a renovation moves the entrance of the unit, or when the original DB is in an awkward location (behind a wardrobe, inside a bathroom, in a kitchen). We move the DB, extend or re-route the incoming cable, and reconnect every circuit to the new board.
  • Sub-DB for additions — when a single addition (a home EV charger, a new aircon, a new kitchen circuit) overloads the existing DB, we install a sub-DB fed from the main, with its own dedicated MCB and RCCB.

Typical DB install time: 3–5 hours for a like-for-like replacement, 5–8 hours for a relocation with re-routing.

DB Box Repair & Replacement (Burnt, Cracked, Overloaded)

A DB box does not fail often — but when it does, the symptoms are unmistakable:

  • Burnt smell from the DB — almost always a loose main lug or a failing main breaker. Stop using the affected circuits and call us immediately.
  • Visible scorching, melting, or discolouration on the MCBs or the busbar — same as above. This is a fire precursor.
  • Cracked DB enclosure — usually from impact, age, or water ingress (bathroom or kitchen-adjacent DBs).
  • MCBs that will not stay in the “on” position — sometimes a failed MCB mechanism, not a wiring fault. We test the MCB and replace if needed.
  • Random trips with no clear pattern — could be a failing MCB at end-of-life, or a genuine circuit fault. We test both and tell you which.
  • Old rewireable fuse box (pre-1990s HDB) — we strongly recommend replacement with a modern MCB + RCCB DB. See Electrical Rewiring Singapore for the broader context.

Typical DB repair time: 1–2 hours for a single MCB or RCCB replacement, 3–5 hours for a full DB swap.

DB Box Upgrade – BTO & Resale HDB

The single most common reason a Singapore HDB flat needs a DB upgrade: the original DB is full. When you have added multiple air-conditioning units, an instant water heater, a dryer, an induction cooker, and a home EV charger, the original 8-way or 12-way DB simply does not have the spare capacity.

A DB upgrade typically involves:

  1. Site survey — we count existing circuits, identify the highest-draw ones, and plan the new DB layout.
  2. New DB selection — usually a 16-way or 24-way metal-enclosed DB, sized to current and future loads.
  3. MCB and RCCB selection — properly rated for each circuit (lighting, sockets, aircon, water heater, etc.), with a main RCCB for the whole board.
  4. Replacement of all MCBs and the main switch — with new, branded, properly rated components.
  5. Re-termination of every circuit to the new DB, with proper cable management, labelling, and torque-checked lugs.
  6. LEW inspection, testing, and CoC issuance — mandatory for any DB change in Singapore.

Typical upgrade time: 1 working day for an 8-way to 16-way swap, with power off for 4–6 hours during the actual swap.

HDB & BTO DB Box (Common Layouts)

HDB DB boxes vary a lot depending on the year the flat was built. Common layouts we work with:

  • Pre-1990s HDB: rewireable fuse box. Almost always needs a full upgrade.
  • 1990s–2000s HDB: 8-way or 12-way MCB DB, often without a main RCCB. We typically upgrade to a 16-way DB with a 63A or 80A main switch and a 30mA main RCCB.
  • 2010s HDB (BTO): 16-way to 24-way DB with main RCCB, sub-RCCBs for socket and water-heater circuits, and individual MCBs for lighting, sockets, and aircon.
  • New BTO (post-2020): 24-way or larger DB, with smart-meter integration and pre-wired for future EV charger and smart-home additions.

If you are not sure what your HDB has, send us a photo of the open DB box (the switches visible) and we will tell you over WhatsApp what you have and what upgrade makes sense.

Fuse Box vs Circuit Breaker Box – What's the Difference?

Older HDB flats and some pre-1990s condos and landed houses still have rewireable fuse boxes instead of modern circuit breaker boxes. The difference matters:

  • Fuse box — uses a thin fuse wire that melts when the circuit overloads. The fuse must be physically replaced after every trip. The wire itself is the safety device.
  • Circuit breaker box (MCB DB) — uses mechanical switches that trip on overload and can be reset with a flick. More reliable, more accurate, and easier to maintain.

If you still have a fuse box, you should consider a full upgrade. Beyond the safety improvement, most modern HDB resale handovers, insurance policies, and EV charger installations require a modern MCB DB.

Signs Your DB Box Needs Attention

  • It is warm to the touch — should never be. A warm DB means a loose connection or an overloaded main.
  • It makes a buzzing or crackling sound — almost always a loose main lug. Treat as urgent.
  • MCBs trip randomly with no load change — failing MCB mechanism at end-of-life.
  • You cannot remember which MCB controls which circuit — labels have worn off. We relabel every DB we touch.
  • You have no spare ways and you are about to add a new circuit — the right time to upgrade.
  • The DB is more than 20 years old — even if it is working, the components are at the back end of their rated life.

If you see any of the above, send us a photo and we will tell you whether it is urgent, recommended, or just a nice-to-have.

Our DB Box Service Process

  1. Photo of the open DB box — WhatsApp a clear photo of the DB with the cover open, showing the existing MCBs, RCCBs, and the main switch. This lets us give you a same-day indicative quote.
  2. Site visit for full quote — for upgrades, relocations, or new installs, we arrange a quick visit to confirm the circuit count, cable routes, and main-supply capacity.
  3. Fixed written quote — transparent, fixed pricing before any work begins. We list every component (DB enclosure, main switch, MCBs, RCCBs, labelling, making good) so there are no surprises.
  4. Installation — power is isolated, the old DB is removed, every circuit is re-terminated in the new DB, and the system is tested under load.
  5. LEW inspection, testing, and CoC issuance — every DB change in Singapore requires a LEW endorsement and a Certificate of Compliance. We issue this as part of the same visit.
  6. Labelled and explained — every circuit is labelled clearly, and we walk you through what each MCB and RCCB controls before we leave.

FAQs

The most common signs are: no spare ways (every MCB position is used), warm or buzzing DB, frequent unexplained trips, or an old rewireable fuse box still in place. Send us a photo and we will tell you within minutes.

Sometimes. If the existing DB has spare ways and the main supply has spare capacity, we can add a new MCB and run a new circuit. If the DB is full or the main is at its limit, a DB upgrade is the safer long-term answer.

A like-for-like swap (e.g. 8-way to 16-way with the same main rating) typically takes one working day, with power off for 4–6 hours during the actual swap. A relocation or main-supply upgrade can take longer.

Technically, yes — but most modern HDB resale handovers, insurance policies, and EV charger installations require a modern MCB DB. We strongly recommend upgrading.
