Neutral vs No-Neutral Smart Switches

The most common failure: buying a beautiful Aqara or Sonoff switch, then finding your switch box has no neutral wire. The switch does not power on, or flickers when the light is off. Here is how to avoid it.

Neutral present

Most newer homes

Most HDB BTOs (post-2015), new condos and landed houses. Almost all smart switches (Aqara, Sonoff, Schneider, Legrand) work in this configuration.

No neutral

Most older homes

Most HDB flats from before 2000, many older condos and some retrofits. You need a no-neutral smart switch (Aqara H1, Sonoff Mini R4, certain Shelly modules) plus a bypass for LED loads.

How to tell which you have

Switch off the MCB for the circuit at the DB.
Remove the face plate of the existing switch.
Count the wires. Three wires (live, switched live and a blue or black neutral) plus earth means a neutral is present. Only two wires plus earth means no neutral.

Renovating?Always run a neutral to every switch box. It costs almost nothing during the electrical rough-in and solves this problem forever. We do it as standard in any rewiring project.

Smart Light Switch Installation

A smart switch looks like a normal switch, with the same Singapore 85 × 85 mm plate. Inside is a small Wi-Fi, Zigbee or Matter radio that lets you control it from your phone, your voice or a schedule.

Retrofitting Smart Switches in HDB / Condo

For existing homes we retrofit smart switches on a like-for-like basis, checking the wiring, switch type and load before anything is bought.

Site survey or photo review. For each switch we confirm the wiring (neutral or not), the switch type and the load (LED, fluorescent, halogen or smart bulb).
Switch selection. The right model for each switch and the right ecosystem (Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Matter, HomeKit). We install Aqara, Sonoff, Schneider AvatarOn, Legrand Mallia / Galea, and Shelly or Lutron on request.
Fixed quote. Written and transparent, before any work begins.
Installation. Typically 15–30 minutes per switch: isolate the circuit, swap the switch, re-terminate and test.
Pairing and setup. We pair the switches to your phone, voice assistant or hub, and can configure scenes for the whole home.
LEW sign-off and CoC where new wiring is needed, such as running a new neutral to a switch box. Issued in the same visit.

How do I know if my switch box has a neutral wire?

Switch off the MCB, remove the face plate and look at the wires. Three wires (live, switched live, neutral) plus earth means a neutral is present. Two wires (live, switched live) plus earth means no neutral. If you are not comfortable doing this, send us a photo of the open switch box.

Can any smart switch work in any HDB?

No. The neutral question is the deal-breaker for most failures. The load type (dimmable LED, non-dimmable LED or halogen) is the second, and the ecosystem you want (HomeKit, Google Home or Alexa) is the third. We check all three before recommending a switch.

Can you install smart switches during a renovation?

Yes, and we strongly recommend it. Rough-in is the right time to add neutrals to every switch box, run Cat 6 data points and plan the hub location. See our Electrical Installation Services page for the wider scope.

What smart switch brand do you recommend?

It depends on the protocol. For Apple HomeKit users, Aqara is the cleanest. For Google Home or Alexa, Schneider AvatarOn and Legrand Mallia are the most reliable. For tech-savvy users, Shelly and Sonoff give the most flexibility.

How much does smart switch installation cost in Singapore?
